Default Budget Compact Camera

I am after a budget, ultra compact point and click camera, that delivers reasonable picture quality and adequate video recording.I bought the Sony Cybershot W380 (on special offer) online a couple of days ago, still waiting for delivery. However I have read some conflicting reviews, some complain about poor image quality/level of noise, others quite the opposite. Its like they are reviewing two different models:

I have seen that the Panasonic DMC S3 is also available for under 100, is just as compact and the IQ is half-decent. The only negative is build quality, but to be expected at such a cheap price. I'm in two minds, whether I should keep the cybershot or return it and order the Panasonic.

If I were to rely on photographyblog's review of both cameras, the Pansonic seems to be the better one, but other reviews have cast doubt. Would appreciate any advice on which of the two to go for.

Thanks

What leads you to believe that the S3 has poor build quality? Panasonic has ranked #1 in build quality on several independent surveys for the last few years at least.

Some of the reviews mentioned build quality wasn't as good as it could be. To be honest, thats not a concern. I'm just not sure which has the better IQ.

The Cybershot w380 was reviewed at its much higher original price, but I've got it at 90 which is the same price as the panasonic.Wondering if reviews make their conclusion relative to price.

The crux is whether the IQ on the Panasonic is signifcantly better than the Sony ? If its negliable than Id keep the Sony.

I'm sure it's negligible either way. I had actually never even heard of the S3 until you mentioned it. If you were comparing the Sony to a Panasonic ZS6/ZS7, I'd recommend returning the Sony, but in this case, I'd say just keep it.
