How about a Nikon S8100 or a Panasonic ZS7?

The best resource, in my opinion, besides this site is snapsort.com. They compare any camera to any camera. The will also recommend cameras weather point and shoot or DSLR based on the price you give them.

I would personally recommend, for a point and shoot, the Canon Powershot S95 because of quality (however not the fastest camera in the world) or the Olympus SZ-30MR because it has 16 MP, 24x Optical Zoom (I think thats like 18mm-600mm), can shoot still shots while recording video without stopping the video, can shoot 3D shots, and has a user manual built into the camera that can be activated with a press of its own dedicated button.

Depending on your budget I would recommend these DSLRs:
Pentax K-x -- around $500ish (I own this camera and love it!)
Nikon D5100 -- around $800 (I've heard so many good things about this camera from friends)
Nikon D7000 -- just over $1000 (my highest recommendation!; this camera is going in my camera bag by Feb. of next year)
Canon 5D Mark II -- $2300 to $3000 ( if you have the money this is a great camera with awesome video and low light but the large price doesn't stop with the body, the lenses come with a hefty price tag too...)

A side note though, the Canon 7D is similar to the D7000 and is faster however the video quality isn't quite as good. Use snapsort to compare cameras before you decide.

Check out the Canon SX130. ZS7 is also a good choice (have one myself) btw.
