dslr is quite a complicated thing. any tips to groom oneself?

Depends on what you already know and what you want to do.

Here's my 2 cents . . .

1) Read the manual so it will tell you how do do everything on your camera. I tell me friends that. And then right after that I say . . . but the manual is only the starting point. It won't necessarily tell you why you want to do all those different things.

2) Read, read, read . . . Here's a few links . . .

3) Take lots of pictures! <grin> That's the fun part.

4) Look at a lot of pictures, either here or sites like Flickr. Get ideas. See shots you want to recreate yourself.

5) Read, read, read. Ask questions . . . here!

6) Take lots of pictures! <The fun part again.>

7) Repeat, repeat, repeat.
