Default Am I Asking For The Impossible - Compact P&S

Here are my requirements for a compact point & shoot camera that I can carry around with me everywhere:

  • 5x optical zoom or more
  • 7MPix to 10MPix
  • 2.5" LCD or larger
  • Optical or electronic view finder
  • ISO 100 to 3200 or more
  • Built-in automatic lens cover
  • Built-in flash
  • Less than 120cm^3 in volume (closed)
  • Metal body (preferred)

This camera is to be for just every-day/night snaps. Nothing special. Price is not important but the camera must meet all of my criteria.

Am I asking for the impossible?

If you are expecting to find this in a current model, yes. Only enthusiast pocket cams offer 10MP and there are only a small handful of those. Viewfinders are quite rare as most people don't care for them, aside from the pros. You will likely need to check out used cams if you want to meet all of those criteria.

Not in the current crop of gizmos. It has to be "custom-built" if any company ever agreed to do that.

The Canon G12 would be perfect for me, except for its size. If only it wasn't as thick (almost 50mm) so that it would easily fit in my pocket.

It is looking more like I will have to go back a few years in development, particularly as a view finder is most important to me.

It's not impossible ... but very close

Here's a quick search I made at Snapsort with your requirements:

http://snapsort.com/explore/best-dig...finder-5x-zoom

As you can see, only 4 cameras show up. I think all 4 would be acceptable to you (I may have missed a restriction), but all are fairly "old" cameras.
The good news is that the one that's ranked best at Snapsort (the Sony DSC-W170) seems to still be available new at a handful of retailers.

Good call by "city zen"- the Sony W170 is a useful little camera.
Interestingly it is the need for a viewfinder that will prove the most elusive on your wish list...!
