The k-r is a higher end dslr. It has more options. And all AF lenses you put on are stabilized. The K-r is more in line with the canon 550D and nikon d5100. It can shoot a ev bracket, does in camera hdr. It has very good image quality.

GAH just as I had decided on the K-R I realize that there's a "bug" in the camera... the AF is messed up in indoors photos (in warm lighting) ... focuses beyond the point. It can maybe be adjusted, or liveview can be used instead, but still not something that sounds very good!

What about the kit lens of the D3100 by the way? It's good I assume? But not as good as the K-R kit lens?
The kit lens is very important as I will use it alone for at least a year or two I'm sure.

the VR model is equal the the pentax kit lens. canon, nikon and pentax 18-55 are all comparable.

You can look at the pentax K-x instead. But you do not get led AF points if you are interested in a higher end dslr.

After more research... seems like the D3100 can stand up to the K-R in image quality anyway?? Even with a kit lens? Or am I badly misstaken?
But it's lacking many of the K-R:s more mid-level features...?

Thanks again for your answers - I'll try to close this thread soon - but there are just too many new surprises turning up all the time...

Is price a main concern?

Yes... The D3100 is 430€... the K-R was closer to 500€ bundled with some extras I still need to buy anywy (like a bag). But nothing over 500€....

Why?

Have you consider the older canon 500D? It has better camera features then the d3100?
