Default looking for these features...

i'm looking for a digicam that has a viewfinder and can shoot pics while shooting video. 10x zoom or more. full PASM a must, manual white balance or very good presets, raw would be nice, decent pics and videos a must - although i don't expect miracles. i'd like to keep it under $400 but could maybe go a hair higher.

Not sure of the prices where you are,but the Panasonic DMC FZ150 should fit the bill(though I'm not sure if you can take a pic during video- maybe you can) or Canon's SX40HS(though I don't think this has RAW capture).
Both Cameras appear to be very versatile individuals with good image quality- Panasonic leads the way on speed,Canon has the edge on zoom range....

You can shoot pics while filming with the FZ150, but you're limited to 3.5MP.

If you don't need hot shoe and the other fancy stuff the FZ150 got, you can go for the FZ47/48.

when taking a photo during video shooting on the fz150, will there be a pause in the video?

I can't imagine that it will. If it did, it would be a worthless feature. But I don't know for sure.

after reading the fz150 manuals, and not finding any reference to a pause in shooting either way, i called panasonic. the rep i talked to also couldn't find any reference so she went and got an fz150 and shot some video while taking pics. i was pretty impressed by this, actually. she says that there is a pause for the time it takes to shoot the pic - she feels it was only noticeable because she was looking, but that if you were shooting audio - a band or an interview - it could be distracting as the sound would also cut in and out. and if you were shooting auto in a darker environment on any auto, the time each pic would cause a pause for in the video would be a little longer. not sure the camera would be useful for me in this scenario, although the progressive video is tempting.

Maybe you won't get the sound clipping if you use a external mic.

In which scenarios do you want to take stills while filming? Just curious.

i shoot bodybuilders working out, very slow and smooth, so little breaks in the video might well show up. i also sometimes shoot interviews.

btw, the rep told me that the sound cuts out as the entire video stops videoing for a fraction of a second.
