Default Canon Rebel XTi upgrade?

I am considering upgrading the my Canon Rebel XTi, which is five years old. I have several Sigma lenses that have Canon-compatible mounts, so I am planning to stick with Canon no matter what.

One reason I'd like to upgrade is that I'd like to shoot video on my DSLR.

I'm looking at these options:
Canon EOS Rebel T3i Digital Camera (Body Only) ($672)

  • SD/SDHC/SDXC Memory Card Slot
  • 18MP APS-C CMOS Sensor
  • DIGIC 4 Imaging Processor
  • 3.0" Clear View Vari-Angle LCD
  • 100-6400 ISO
  • Full HD Movie Mode w/ Manual Exposure
  • Compatible with Canon EF and EF-S Lenses
  • 3.7 Frames/Second Continuous Shooting
  • 63 Zone Dual-Layer Metering / 9-Point AF
  • Intelligent Auto Mode

or
Canon EOS 60D DSLR Camera (Body Only) ($899)

  • 18MP APS-C CMOS Sensor
  • 1920 x 1080 HD Video Capture
  • SD/SDHC/SDXC Memory Card Slot
  • Vari-Angle Clear View 3.0" Flip-Out LCD
  • DIGIC 4 Image Processor
  • 5.3 fps Continuous Shooting
  • Works with all Canon EF and EF-S Lenses
  • ISO 6400 - Expandable to 12800
  • HDMI Output to HDTV
  • In-Camera Editing Options

Should I hold out for 60D? Is it worth the extra $$$?

I am leery about the description of the T3i "Full HD Movie Mode w/ Manual Exposure" compared to the 60D's "1920 x 1080 HD Video Capture."

Thanks.

Here's a description of the two cameras video modes...
600D...

and the 60D...

There really doesn't seem to be an awful lot between the two camera's overall- other than an improved build quality and more speed(burst mode) on the 60D.
Is that worth the extra...? Maybe if you shoot twitchy wildlife/sports often...

Thanks for the links, Simon.

This agrees with what I'd read elsewhere: one review said the 60D had been "neutered" and most reviews I've seen seemed to indicate that the 600D has much more bang for the buck.

My feeling is that with the savings I could possibly get a Speedlite, which I do not have.

I dont think you would go wrong with the 600d/T3i.

Thanks, wave01. I don't buy a new camera very frequently and want to make the right choice, but I am not seeing very compelling reasons to spring for the 60D.

I went ahead and got the 60D on the Canon loyalty discount, and I really do like the feel of it. It's heavier than my Rebel, so the latter does stand ready for casual outings. In retrospect, I don't think I would have been unhappy at all with the T3i, though.

Weight would be a factor for me because a lot of my shooting involves long days, walking around.

I'll have to look into this loyalty discount--maybe I am eligible.

Thanks.
