That's probably because the flash was high enough so that it didn't fully illuminate them, plus ambient light contributed more to the exposure since the subject was brightly illuminated (so the flash burst was probably very short)..

You can see the camera settings used in that photo's Exif. It was taken with flash.

You may want to consider getting an EXIF viewer so you can see those types of things. ;-)

I just viewed the Exif for that one using Alan Raskin's Exif Viewer, which is a Firefox addon that let's you right click on a photo and select a menu choice to see Exif information when browsing using Firefox (so that you don't need to download the photo first to see settings). There are a number of free Exif viewers available, and many image viewers and editors also let you see Exif information.

Yes, as Jim says it's in the EXIF for the pic that it was taken with flash. I was on a slightly raised area to the right of the pit, leaning against a pillar, and holding the camera as high as I could (which isn't very high as I'm only 5-foot-2 ).
