Default hi

I'd shoot one last question.

What do you think about the sigma/tamaron 18-200 mm and the 17-50mm lenses? good buys?

if you go with a mega zoom lens, go with the tamron 18-270 or sigma 18-250, they are both much better then the 18-200. 18-200 is that good of a lens, that is reflected in the price.

The 17-50 is a excellent lens. Would be a real upgrade to the kit lens 18-55.

Default No brainer - Go with the 5100

The 5100 has the best specs of any of the cameras listed here. Also, it has an articulated screen which is way useful. Yes there are some Nikkor lenses that will nt auto-focus on the camera, but there are plenty of DX lenses out there to suit every possible need you may have.

My wife has a D5000 and she loves it.

As for lenses - the kit 18-55 and 55-200 have respectable performance. If you need more then the Tamron 70-300 is an excellent addition.

The d5100 is better then the d3100, but depending on what you want, the 550D is better then the d5100 in certain things, and the d5100 is better then the 550D in others. Real world and paper specs are two different things.
