In many cameras GPS certainly does drain the battery- of course, you can usually turn this feature off.

well, they've both got 24x zoom @ f/2.8-5.2, HD video. the 47 doesn't shoot RAW, which it was unlikely your wife would use, and it has a CCD where the 150 has CMOS. the 47 has a much slower burst rate - not sure if she'd use that or not. i've read that the 47's pics are a little noisier but still pretty good. and it's an ounce lighter than the 150, but i doubt that's enough to make much of a difference. oh, i don't think the 47 has the articulated screen.

btw, sent you a pm.

Raw is basically an image saved without utilising the cameras on board image processing- allowing for lots of fine tuning of the image on your computer.
Burst rate is the amount of pictures the camera can take in a short space of time- usually quoted as "frames per second" or "fps".
The FZ-150 has a faster auto-focus that the FZ47 in addition to the faster fps and it does have better image quality, especially in lower lighting conditions. It does also have many other small additions and upgrades, making it overall a much better camera,in my humble opinion....
Not that the FZ-47 was a "pup".....

I was going to buy the FZ150 myself about a week ago. However, the price for the FZ47 sank to under $200 at a few places while the price for the FZ150 stayed about $400, so I saved the money and used that saved money plus a little more to buy a good lens for my DSLR.
I will be surprised if the price for the FZ150 goes below $380 before the end of the year.
There are two pretty favorable reviews of both the cameras at dcresource. Check out the sample images. Check out the SX230 there, too.
One thing to think about is size. The bigger the camera, the less likely the average person is to carry it around. A little camera, like the SX230 or SX220, will fit into your wife's pocket or purse. A bigger camera, like the FZ150, will be carried around in its own bag, probably. A DSLR with big zoom lens on it, may weigh twice as much as the FZ47. It may take great pictures, but if it's left home because of its bulk and weight, it won't take any pictures.
I love superzooms and I like my DSLR, but I would buy only a pocketable point and shoot for my wife or mom.
