Considering your budget, I ll suggest you to choose between Panasonic Fz150 or Canon SX40 HS. Personally, I'll prefer Panasonic Fz150.

Default Also seeking recommendations

I am in the exact same situation. Budget of ~$400 and seeking the best camera in terms of image quality.

Went to a photo store and they recommended either one of these: Panasonic ZS10, Samsung wb-750, Canon SX230 or the Canon S95.

I was originally intending on buying the Nikon S9100. I'm going to review the Panasonic Fz150 tonight.

picbeg- the Nikon S9100,despite it's zoom- is effectively an "auto" point and shoot- with very little room for manual manipulation(of course that may not matter to you...)- whereas the FZ-150 is a much bigger(physically) camera with a plethora of manual control, auto modes and many other features. It's a veritable box of tricks and probably the best in its class....
If zoom is of no significance,in addition to compactness/pocketability AND image quality then the S95 has it( the S100 is now out too...!)
However,if you want a long zoom AND pocketability, then the Canon SX220/230 is right up there....

More info is need, do you need allot of zoom. The megazooms are good for that purpose. But you can get better IQ form a larger sensor point and shoot like a s95 or lx5 with less zoom. Especially in low light shooting.

Sorry for hijacking the thread bestdigcam, but it sounds like we're in a similar scenario.

Thanks for the replies. I am only looking for an auto point and shoot camera with excellent image quality. Majority of pictures are indoor and some outdoor family shots.

For me, it's Image Quality >> price > zoom > pocketability.

It sounds like the S95 is the winner, but the Canon S95 is about $100.00 more than the SX30, SX230, Nik. P500 and Panasonic ZS10.

I'll wait 1 more week to see if it goes on sale.

I think S95 is around $270 USD now and it has only 3x optical zoom. Considering the sensor size it should have better IQ than Panasonic Fz150. But we have seen excellent IQ of Fz150 here too (those soccer images)

Picbeg ask about a pocketable camera, the fz150 is not that. And indoor family stuff is a top priority, the s95 is better for that purpose.
