Fuji HS20EXR is far better &
consider Canon Powershot SX40 HS and Lumix DMC-FZ150 also.
above three are very compatative and very close .
After that its up to you.

In my humble opinion- the top "bridge" camera out there right now is probably the Panasonic FZ-150 or the Canon SX40HS- though, these two are quite a bit more expensive than the two you mention.
The slightly less specified(and cheaper) FZ-100 is still around,as is the Canon SX30- though both of these are slightly inferior to their later models.
Worth bearing in mind also,is the fact that the Fuji HS10 is still available in some places.
Back to the P500 v HS20... tough one to call,as specs on paper are quite similar- but assuming all else being equal, the Manual zoom of the Fuji would clinch it...

I actually have both. I bought the Nikon last year at the recogmendation of a friend who uses Nikon but for me I just could not keep it steady even with the shakeproof thingy on and when i was shopping for the Nikon it was a toss tween the Nikon and the Fuji HS10. So this year I bought the Fuji HS20 and was so happy from day one...it just takes a little getting used to the manual zoom instead of hitting a button. so I would say buy the Fuji HS20 if you have not already bought a camera

I suppose I should add that the P510 has replaced the P500 and its stabilisation uses a different method to the P500 and it works very well.

They might help you decide although there are so many good cameras out there now.
Whatever you buy take a lot of photos and read a few books and you will advance quickly.
Good luck.
