Well, tried a G3 and didnt like the EVF so back to a DSLR now. Trying to decide between a 500D or a 40D at the moment. Low light is a must as i shoot indoors quite a bit of family. Already have a 50mm 1.8.

An interesting dilemma....
An older semi-pro model or a later lower end model (though not quite entry level...).

The 40D has the far superior build quality and a much faster burst/frame rate...
The 500D has more resolution and a movie mode- and depending on your train of thought- is lighter/smaller.

Although the 500D has more iso settings than the 40D- 6400 and 12,800- those extra two settings are not really usable (in my opinion) with too much noise.
I wouldn't expect there to be much between the two cameras side by side, between iso 100 and 3200.

Given the choice between a 40D and a D90 which would you go for and why?

If taking still images was all I was interested in- and both cameras were in identical condition- I'd have to go with the 40D.
You can't hide it's semi pro construction (which I like- some prefer lighter...) and it's a very swift operator in all departments.
That's not to say the D90 isn't a good camera- because it's a very fine camera, with an awful lot of toys on board- including movie capture.
But it'd be the 40D for me...... because of it's speed and construction.
