Default First DSLR: Canon EOS 600D or Nikon D5100?

Hello everyone

I've decided to make the jump from P&S camera to DSLR, and for my needs these two cameras are exactly what I need. However, even after reading reviews online I still cannot decide which one is better.

Which one do you recommend? or is there some other camera which is more recommended(company&model)?

TIA

The canon has the nicer AF system, better HD system. The nikon sensor is a little cleaner as high iso. Also the canon gives you the option of off camera ttl flash control with the built in flash.

Both have good lens options, nikon will not af with the older AF series lenses, but they have AF-s in the same caliber.

These are two of the best cameras in this class. You won't go far wrong
regardless of which one you buy.

There isn't a lot of difference between them in terms of image quality,
features, build quality etc....

The Canon T2i (550D) is also a very fine camera. It lacks a flip-out
screen and wireless control for external flash. Otherwise, it is more
or less identical to the T3i (600D).

Pentax and Sony are also worth considering. As Nikon, Pentax and Sony
all use Sony image sensors, you can expect identical image quality from
all of them.

If you are just going to buy a body with the kit lens, you can just pick
any of them at random. They are all fit-for-purpose.

If you are likely to need extra lenses and accessories, there is
probably a case for choosing one system over another. Canon
and Nikon have a better selection of new and used lenses and
accessories. Good lenses are quite expensive. Once you buy
a few of them, you are effectively married to that system.

The 600D and the Nikon D5100 are both fine camera's- and as you say RotemFE777- both fit your needs. So,it seems to me you actually have an easy decision- as either will suffice..!!
If possible- get both in your hands and see which you prefer- which seems more logically laid out, which "feels" better..etc.
Quite often ones pre-decision can be swayed once they've seen/tried a given camera...
