Some places don't put batteries in the cameras they have on display, so watch for that.

Well, I have been all over town and not one of the cameras suggested can be found, with the exception of the Canon S100. Now, because I have waited so long I have to revise my spending limit to $350 which is awful I know, but hoping to find something on sale.

I really did want to find something locally so I could feel it and take sample pics as suggested, but that isn't going to happen.

There aren't any cheap solutions for some of the things you want to do. All you can do is go through a process of trial and error to see which cameras are capable of producing results you're satisfied with AND you can afford.
