The Canon 18-55 kit lens is sharper than the Nikon 18-55 kit lens, and the Canon 15-85 (a very popular focal length range for event photography) is slightly better than the Nikon 16-85.

Based on what you want to shoot, I'd say get a Canon.

It's interesting, but there are so many different reviews on the internet about 600d and d5100...just 5 minutes ago I red that nikon 18-55mm kit lens is sharper and better than canons, and here is the other way around. That can be confusing and hard to pick one of these cameras...I'm in the same problem, as I gave up on NEX for now and decided to go for real dslr. I need camera for everyday photo, indoor, my little 2yo, and sometimes travel...so is it canon or nikon? And do I stay on kit lens or maybe something better cause I can spend around 800$.
