Default Taking the next step

Hi all, I'm looking to take the next step and get a DSLR camera. My son has a Nikon D3100 and it's nice. I'm thinking about getting the Nikon D5100. I'm not a pro by any means. And I like my Nikon L820. But I want to take the next step. Like I said, I like the D5100. But the Canon EOS looks nice too. I want to keep my price point at 550.00 or lower. Help!

Default A number of options

Well, the D5100 is supposed to be a good deal. If you want to look around on Ebay or places like dealsofamerica, you might be able to get a D5200 for less than $600. You could also get a Canon T3i or T4i for less than that price. Sony is selling its A58 for that price. There are all good cameras. If you can, get your hands on them and see how they feel.
Good luck!

Thanks for the advice. I didn't look into the D5200. I'll need to. I have a few T4i bookmarked on the bay. I never heard of dealsofamercia. I'm going there now

The D5100 and the D5200 are both very good. Since your son has the D3100, and since they are both interchangeable lens cameras, you could share lenses if you went with a Nikon as well.

I was thinking that as well, Since he has a decent telephoto lens I could use that if needed untill I saved enough for one.

I own a D3100 and am very happy with it... though the D5100's sensor offers improved dynamic range and noise control as well as resolution- and the D5200's sensor ups the ante again- and has a superior AF system... and shoot faster...

I'm starting to learn that there are a lot of things to consider! My son loves his 3100.I can't afford the 5200. So I think I'll go with the 5100. I have to wait another week or so before I buy. So I can still look at my options.

If money is an issue, you could get another D3100.

Another option is a factory refurbished D5100. These are generally cameras that were returned to the retailer so they can't be sold as new, they're returned to the factory service center where they are given a thorough going over, and are offered for sale as refurbished with a significant discount, but a 90 day warranty instead of the 1 year warranty that new cameras get. Adormama sells a new D5100 body for $547, but a refurbished D5100 for $399.
