Default Camera purchase advise needed

Am looking at the Nikon Coolpix L830 vs Cannon SX510HS which are on sale this week. Two things I would like are to be able to shoot my daughter playing field hockey from a distance and good in low light. Any advise and or other suggestions would be apprciated. Thanks!

G'day Kleer

Firstly - welcome to Steves ... you'll find heaps of friendly & knowledgable people here

So you'd like to shoot your daughter ...
I would have done the same years ago but she's grown up now

Ah - daughter out on the hockey field - a little bit different - and now distance and lighting comes into the equation

This implies a 'real good' lens that will pick up good detail from a distance, and a good camera to 'see' and record things as well

Having a qwik sqwiz at DP Review -
http://www.dpreview.com/products/com...=canon_sx510hs

shows that the coolpix does not have any working mode other than 'automatic' and 'scenes', so you cannot choose "shutter" mode for fast action etc

The industry 'leader' for superzoom cameras is the Panasonic FZ200 with its superb Leica f2,8 zoom lens. This professional calibre lens stays at f2,8 [in low light] as the lens is zoomed out to its maximum

All other superzoom lenses [and most dSLR lenses] reduce the lens aperture while zooming - and the Canon 510 drops from f3,4 to f5,8 during zooming

So - while the Canon here is better suited than the Coolpix, the Panny FZ200 will out perform both of them - if your budget can stretch to buying it

Hope this helps a bit

Phil

The FZ200 might be a good choice (I own one and i'm very pleased with it).
If you want to stay in your price range you'll have to compromise between zoom and
low light capacity. f.i. The Nikon P340 has better low light capacity(larger sensor), but has a limited
zoom range (24-120 mm).

Thank you both for your response. I would love the Panasonic but it is a little over my budget right now. Will have to read up on the Nikon a bit more. Today is the last day of the sale on the Cannon which is $199 right now. I thought this was a good price so I will have to figure out which way I want to go.
Thanks again.

The Canon will be the best choice, as the Nikon has poor low light performance.

The FZ200 has got a 50 cash back on it in the UK right now ,so I imagine it will have the equivalent in the USA
