Default Early Teen's first camera

What should the first camera of a twelve year old be.......??? He or she has not previous photo experience.

does he have any interest in photography? if so, what kind of things would he like to shoot? also what's the budget?

This could be a camera with a good auto mode, but also with more advanced settings, so he/she can learn. Must it be pocketable or may it be a larger camera? And, yes what is the budget?

I think most kids would prefer a smart phone with the built in camera to a stand alone camera, as it makes the photos easier to share

Unless the youngster has an interest in "photography" as opposed to just taking pics, VTphotog is probably right....!

Cameras make terrible gifts. "Someone" will need to supply SD cards, batteries, bag/pouch, printing supplies, accessories, etc. and need to repair/replace if necessary.

A 12 year old will want "video" to upload to You Tube and that opens up a whole other range of issues for a parent to deal with. Thanks, but No Thanks.
