Default Non DSLR - Canon vs Nikon vs Lumix

I am thinking of purchasing a Non DSLR camera that sells for between $150 and $300. I am looking for Image Stabilization, decent optical zoom and ability to do manual, AV and TV.

G'day mate

In this price range I think that you are unlilely to find all of Image Stabilization, decent optical zoom and ability to do manual, AV and TV

Inexpensive cameras [ie: those under say $500] are targetted at the weekend / holiday happy snapper who will be on Auto for 98% of the time. You can certainly find some $300 cameras which will have 'some' non-auto functions, but whether they will have all your listed bits is a big question mark

eg:
do you want a viewfinder? or are you okay with the rear LCD screen .... a pain in the rear-end to use in many situations
do you want more than 10x zoom? .... if you do the camera shake at max zoom may outweigh the image stabilisation capabilities of a 'cheap' camera
do you want low light and good ISO capabilities? .... low light use needs a 'good' lens, and good ISO means good noise suppression ~ not always found in that price range

Keep talking to us here as there are plenty of experts here and your answers will start to flow

Hope this helps
Phil

In the US, you will find a lot of the "bridge" type superzooms that sell in the $300 range. You might see some deep discounts and specials on Nikon and Panasonic over the holiday season.

Watch Amazon if you are in the US. The Panasonic FZ80 is only $347 new.
