I have a trusty old Minolta 28-70mm 35mm film point-and-shooter that I finally need to replace. It is highly frustrating that there are absolutely no digital equivalents on the market at the moment.

Couldit be that I amthe only one who wants a affordable 28mm equivalent that I can slip into my pocket as I would, say, a Sony cybershot compact? Pretty much so by the look of things.

The closest thing on the market at the moment is the $650 Nikon Coolpix 5400 which shows how bad things are for us wide-anglers (all 2 of us!) I finally found something thatwill do with - the Ricoh Caplio G4 Wide. I'll order one from the UK as soon as I get the chance.

If you know of any alternatives please let me know

The Canon S60 has a 35mm Equivalent Focal Range of 28-100mm. The only major gripe I've heard about it is some Purple Fringing in high contrast areas. It's not as small as a subcompact Sony (so it may not fit inmany pockets), but it's still fairly compact:

In a slightly larger camera, you may want to look at the Olympus C-5060 WZ (for Wide Zoom). It has a 35mm Equivalent Focal Range of 27-110mm:

Wow, the canon is indeed something like what I'm after. It is certainly not cheap at $430 though, I'll have to start saving..

The olympus however 5060 cannot pass for a compact camera and is bulkier than even the Coolpix 5400. Wish minolta could make the $180 Dimage x20 with a 28mm equivlens.

Thanks JimC
