Hello everyone,

I am looking for a still camera that can shoot 640x480 mpeg video at 20+ frames per second for at least 20 second clip lengths.

Can anyone tell me what camera models new or discontinued have that
capability?

Thank you in advance,

Felix

There are many out there that have that capability and then some. For starters take a look at the Sony DSC W1. 640X480 limited only by the size of memory, however many others as well to choose from. How much megpixels, zoom power, memory type, etc. do you want? Then narrow it down from there.

Thanks Pete, for your response and suggestions.

I noticed Bevery W's great thread below - very informative.

How much does a camera's megapixel count effect it's video quality?
I am wondering about that as 640 x 480 vga video is so much less resolution than the still formats.

Regards,

Felix

I also have been looking for a camera that can shoot 640x480 movies at high resolution. I did a search for all cameras that could do videos at 24 fps or better (resolution of TV's in USA, 25fps in Europe I believe). After doing the search I started the following thread on all cameras capable of 30 frames per second since I found no camera that stopped at 24 as their best quality.

The only camera that I can remember that almost made it onto my list but missed it by a little bit was the Minolta DiMage A2 that does 544x408 videos at 30fps. I do know that there was some 20fps, but I don't remember which ones they were. I can give you the list I came up with of ALL non discontinued cameras that do videos (over 200 cameras and growing daily) if you wish to find the few cameras that my list would exclude that still fits into your requirements.

hi beverly - thanks for your response - and yes you are the queen of still cam video info - your thread is fantastic.

actually i quite like 640x480 video at 20 fps. if you have any info on
cameras operating at that frame rate for more than 20 seconds it would
be most helpful to me as i am shooting a project which doesn't require the
full 30fps frame rate. discontinued models are fine - can find on ebay etc.

also that new pentax looks to be pretty cool no?

best,

felix

Unfortunately I didn't keep notes as to why I crossed a camera off the cameras with movies list. Any camera that didn't do 640x480 at 24fps or better was crossed off. The only exception to that no notes was the Minolta DiMage A2 that I already told you about (544x408 instead of 640x480).

Do you want all the cameras that have a video mode but don't do it at 640x480 at 30fps? It will be like 200 cameras and the vast majority will NOT be 640x480 or in the 20 to 23 fps range that I didn't look at. Most will be 320x240 at 15fps for max of 30 seconds.
