Am really at a loss, seemingly spoilt for choice. I know that I only need 3MP; I want a powerful zoom; and I have absolutely no need for audio/movie capability, so I'd rather not pay for something I won't be using. From the research I've done, it seems to come down to a choice between the Canon S1, Fuji S-5000, Olympus C-765 and the Panasonic Lumix FZ3. Frankly, I don't anticipate using the full 10 (or 12) x zoom, and would probably be content with 6-8x. In such circumstances, (i) is image stabilisation that necessary; and/or (ii) would there be any other cameras that you would suggest that I consider?

many thanks in advance.

Well you forgot one. How about the Konica-Minolta Z-10. Since your requirements are for only 8X optical zoom, here is your digital camera. www.steves-digitcams.com has done a review on this camera that is worth some study.

Here is another long zoom that steve has recently reviewed: the Kyocera M410R.

If you only need 3MP then get the Canon S1 IS. The IS is a great feature. You can never have too much zoom. Easy to use. Looks cool. Cheap Memory (compact flash). Cheap Batteries (NiMh rechargables). Also AA's
