Maybe you can get a grip on the Kodak Easyshare CX6200: it is inexpensive, quite sturdy, has no optical zoom (no protractive lens) and image quality in daylight is good. The CX6200 is good enough for an 8-year old.

Btw: the CX6200 is extremely easy to use. It has no ISO settings and other presets, so it is the master of simplicity - just point and shoot. :|
