I am looking for a 5MP camera, and am leaning towards these two. I want something small, and something that takes great pictures(obviously).

After reading a bit, I think the S50 is more geared towards the professional side of things, though it's easy to use and anyone can use it. Is that accurate?

You can recommend another small camera too in the 5MP range, but I like Canon. I have an S200 right now. If anyone can post some sample pictures that you took with these two cameras, that would be nice.

Also, which one would have the better macro shot?

EDIT: Just saw something about a new Canon camera, the SD300 or something. What are your opinions on that?

Ok, maybe you can answer this because I am not too sure. Which one of these has better details for the macro shot, the S500 or the S60? I think the S500 has more definition in the dollar bill, but I'm not sure.

No flash was used though, so the lighting might have an effect, plus the S500 one is a bit closer.

What do I have to do to get a reply here?

And I meant the S60, not the S50.

I haven't used either camera but I do have a Canon S30, the older version of the S40/50/60/70 series.

I was very pleased with the S30. It took fine photos and had an excellent range of manual controls. However if I were choosing today I'd probably lean towards the S500 over the 50 or 60 because of the smaller size. The 50/60 cameras are reasonably small. They fit fine in a coat pocket, less fine in a shirt pocket. If that's important to you, go with the smaller camera. On the other hand if you prefer something with a little heft to it, the S500 may feel too small.

As for image quality, I suspect that the internals are the same. But to check, go to Steve's reviews, compare the features and look at the photos from both.

I'm sure that you have helped a lot of other people already and therefore are feeling that you've contributed much more to this group than you've gotten back.

Perhaps someone who has not contributed as much as you will feel guilty and answer your questions.

Regards,

Alan

That isn't the point, the advanced people here should be trying to help people like me out, who don't know as much about photography, and just like taking pictures. They shouldn't be saying "Oh, he's new and hasn't helped anyone, let's not help him".

Nevertheless, thanks for your input. I am kind of leaning towards the S500 as well.

I tried looking at the photos, like the ones I posted here, but I have a hard time discerning between the little qualities, because like I said, I am not an advanced user who knows what to look for.

I have an IXUS 40 - (SD300) which is a lovely little camera. Although 4MP I think out of the ultra-compacts (Z55, s5i, T1etc) it probably takes the best pictures and I would heartily recommend it. You will get better pictures with the S60but it depends whether the extra size matters to you or not.

PS I'm sure nobody's trying to snub anyone else. I've noticed that compared to the dpreview.com forums, there just aren't as many people here so sometimes stuff hangs around for a while before getting answered. Also, people often ask questions that have already been covered.

Good luck choosing a camera.

Ok, thanks. I don't see that much of a difference between the two pictures I posted here. I'll probably end up getting the S500.

Or how about this one? http://www.steves-digicams.com/2004_reviews/sd20.html

I believe your decision comes down to 'feature set' vs. size. I will say I love canon digicams - I own an S40, my father owns the S50 and I know a couple people that own older versions of the 'elph' series. Both cameras take great pictures. But for around $120 more the S50 has a lot more pro-like features for you to grow into. So I would say if you want to grow as a photographer go with the S50. If you just want a high-quality camera that is relatively small go with the 500. The 50 will still fit in a pocket but bearly and it's a bit heavier the 500 fits nicely. Not being much of a macro photographer I can't say if either is better than the other.
