I need an inexpensive (less than $600 US) digital camera to take pictures of my son's sports activities (outdoors). I have an HP850 that takes great still photos but has too much lag time for sports. I am looking for the best lag time, time between shots, and at least a 10x optical lens, preferrably with some form of image stability.

So far I from the reviews it seems that thePanasonic DMC-FZ20 or the Konica Minolta DiMAGE Z-3 are the best fits. I am leaning toward the Z-3 because I already have 4 sets of rechargable AAs, but if the camera is good enough, I'll go with a proprietary battery.

Any help would be appreciated.

It's tough to get one camera that's all things (unless you get into higher-end dSLRs). The Kyocera M410R is a 10x zoom with "virtually non-existent shutter lag time of 0.07 second":

It doesn't have IS.
