The G500 will not give you Aperture Priority Mode, and you'd be limited to only two aperture choices in full Manual Exposure Mode.

It also does not have an Autofocus Assist Lamp, so you may need to resort to fixed focus choices in lower light.

It's also a slower camera than the newer Canon models you're looking at (which appear to be quite fast).

It does take nice pics. I've got the Konica branded version of this model. You can see some "straight from the camera" snapshots from mine at this link:
