I own the Nikon N55 from a few years back, and it packs a punch. It is an entry level camera withquite a few reallyuseful features. However, it currently is out of commission because of an unknown error (almost guaranteed to be my fault). I'm having it serviced tomorrow.I would highly reccomend it.

If I were taking a photography class, I would look at getting an older camera model that can be used manually & with some automatic functions too. For instance, you can find a decent Nikon N8008s for peanuts right now (& it's a great, older auto-focus camera). A few other bargains are a Nikon FE2, FG or an FA. Add a few lenses & you'll have all you need for less than a new body alone.

I might also suggest a used Canon AE1 or AE1-P if you want a camera that will take a beating and still provide quality photos.......lenses are available at low prices used all the time.... this is a great camera to learn on.
