Which of these:

Canon A95 or Canon S1 IS or Fuji FinePix S5500/S5100

would be the best buy?

Canon A95 is good for general photography for the family...

The S1 IS is good for zoom (but if you want an ultra-zoom camera, also consider the Panasonic FZ3)... The Fuji S5500 is also an ultra-zoom but I prefer Canon S1 IS or Panasonic FZ3 over that because Fuji does not have image stabilization. The Fuji is less expensive(??) but I highly value image stabilization (IS) so I would not consider a high-zoom camera without IS unless you are planning to use a tripod (if you ARE planning to use a tripod, also consider something like the Olympus zoom cameras (I forget their model names), which have no IS but are very small)...

the image quality from the S1 IS is pretty horrible, especially at telephoto, from what I've seen playing with demo's here at work. Also, we've had to send 3 customer cameras back to canon for repairs because the flash stopped popping up on all 3 of them. We stopped carrying that camera here completely now, but we'll order them for people that want them, I just make sure to tell them about the flash issue and the quality issues.
