The Canon S500 has a long shutter mode that gives up to 15 seconds. I would guess one of the shooting modes will lock the focus at infinity for you. You can use the self timer to avoid shake when you activate the shutter.

Imaging Resource always has a night section in the conclusions of their reviews and DCRP always has sample night shots – usually at various ISO. I would look through Steve's best cameras in the sub-compact category and then cross check the night capability at Imaging Resource. You need at least 8 seconds and long exposure noise reduction. For the northern lights you probably want 16-second capability. You also need a tripod socket of course – some ultra compacts don't have one so look at Steve's pictures on the introduction page to make sure there is one if you want to go really small.
