I currently shoot with a Dimage A-1 which gives nice shots but I want to take more indoor shots of my son playing volleyball. I get adequate pics with the high speed advance but because of low light the grain is often too high. The bulk of the D-SLR's concerns me because I'm not sure I want to tote that around with the video camera, tripod, portable chairs etc that we bring to these tournaments. Is an upgrade that much better to let's say a Canon 20D or Nikon D70? Thanks.

I'm not an expert in DSLRs but yes, the DSLRs ARE that much better when it comes to noise. But they cost a lot (especially if you try to replicate all the features of a prosumer camera).

There are some somewhat "small" DSLRs like Pentax *ist DS so check that out if size is an issue. However, Pentax isn't as common and I imagine the lens will cost more (have less choices).

I shot a fair amount of low light sports. I started out with a DRebel and have recently upgraded to a 20D. With the 20D I'm finding that I get a good pic using ISO3200 that clean up nicely with Neat Image. Haven't shot volleyball yet... But to get really good shots I'm going to say you really need to consider a DSLR with a fast lens...

Thanks for your input. I have read some reviews on the ist ds and although it is nice and compact some reviewers have said that the autofocus is slower than some of the others which is why I lean toward the 20D.
