I have never shopped for either of these cameras, don't have an ultra-zoom camera, but the Panasonic have always been the most popular ultra-zoom. It is partly due to the fact that the Panasonic has a constant aperture of f2.8 throughout the zoom range, while the Minolta goes up to f4.5 at maximum telephoto. Its not TERRIBLY bad, but it limits the ability to take action shots from far. Also, the Minolta lacks AF-assist lamp, which makes its low light focusing quite poor. That combined to the slower lense at telephoto makes the camera not so great in low light.

Both cameras are good tho but the Panasonic is often viewed as the better one and its probably what people who had to make the same choice as you will tell you.

Nicolas pretty much hits the nail... the Panasonic is way better (the only thing the KM is better at is video)... you also might want to see when the KM Z5 (which was announced recnently) will come out...

hard to say... I would guess that they would NOT announce anything in Feb... I think panaosnic release cycle is something like Sept... so you probably have to wait until Sept...
