I am looking to buy my first digital camera and am wanting something really compact, has a decent zoom, fast, and takes really great pictures. 4 verus 5 mp probably does not matter in that I will mainly be printing 4x6 ot 5x7 prints, with an occassional 8x10 for special occasions. If I am wrong here, please let me know.

I have narrowed my choices down to either the Canon SD300 or Konica Minolta X50.

Any advice/recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Greg

I also checked the X50 against the SD300, but I prefer the later.

Here's a comparison:

I also check the lenses quality by looking at the Surf photos:

I think SD300 has better image quality.

I picked both in my hands and the X50 felt a bit cheapo, while the SD300 was more sturdy.

Two other details that made me prefer the SD300 is the 640x480 video and the orientation sensor (which I presume means that I won't have to turn the images manually when making portaits).

I also prefer the SD300. To me, it just seems more sturdy. That, and it takes great pictures along with a very good video mode. I think the only reason to go with the X50 is if you can't deal with the barrel coming out of the body (for whatever reason). Of the two just to be repetitive, I would go with the SD300.

Best of luck with your search!~Jack

I just ordered an SD300 after months of research. I had it narrowed down to the Casio EX Z55 and the SD300. From what I can tell, the Canon is going to take a little better picture and has a much better movie mode. The only advantage I can see in the Minolta is more MP and lower price. All the other advantages go to Canon.

Yeah... the orientation sensor automatically flips the picture when you shoot vertically...
