Hello All, Newbie here.

Gained loads of info of this site but need to ask this question.

I've narrowed my search down to either the Olympus C-7000 or the C-5060 and i'm wondering what other users think.

I like the flip up screen, the remote control and the wide lens on the 5060, but also like the higher meg, longer optical lens and the fact that the C-7000 is a lot newer too.

Any help appreciated.

I think you'll find the C-5060 has just about run its course + a few had problems - these, according to a letter from Olympus, have been ironed out on the new replacement C-7070 which is nearly the same + a few usefull improvements.
The C-7000 is quite compact, 7.1mp with a zoom from 38 - 190 (5x) this is quite a good zoom - if compact is for you then it's a great camera - if, however, you need a wider angle for landscapes or indoor photography - then the C7070 may be a better choice - this has a 4.1x zoom 27-110
Reading your letter makes me think that the C-7070 would be ideal as it is a 7.1 mp 5060. I am about to buy one as it happens - just as soon as my local shop has it in stock. There are pics on the Japanes Oly website which look good.
Hope that helps
Geoff:-)

Yeah, the 5060 does seem an old camera in 'relative'terms. I do really like the 7070 but i'm not sure that the budget will stretch this far. I'm now selling my canon SLR and Oly C-4000z and there is'nt much more to play with. The problems with the 5060 really concern me, espcially as i intend to buy on line where both the 5060 and C-70 are about the £300 - £320 mark.Olympus may say it was a bad batch but i'm unsure. I may pull the C-4000z of ebay until the 7070 drops in price, i could'nt be without a camera for too long! Anyway thanks for the advice.

If you can keep the C-4000z at all - I would. I know it's not up to date or the most trendy - but it takes good pics - I very nearly got one when I got my little C-740.
I'm trying to find a way of selling my OM2n and all the equipment and bag to help pay for the C-7070 but I will buy it as soon as pos either way - I have searched out the cheapest prices and I can get my local Jessops to match or at last get close to the best price. Do you need a wide zoom?? If not there may be other good options available. I reckon the C-5060 is going to be very cheap now. Olympus have resolved the problem - but in all fairness that doesn't guarantee that a rougue one won't appear form time to time (shame). If you are in the US then the Nikon 8400 is going very cheap - I hear it's something like $200= rebate. It's not quite as sharp as the 7070, but would be an alternative to the 5060 as it has more MP. It's not for me though as the tele end is to shore (24-85).
let me know what you think - use the e-mail if you prefer

Geoff, has Olympus publicly acknowledged the problems with the 5060?

Unfortunatly after a lot of research, the problem with the C-5060 is too much hassle to worry about. the C-7070 is just outside my budget (and I really want that remote control which is not included!), so i've decided to go for a Canon G6, Online price of £371 delivered is too good a price to resist. Sorry Olympus, lost a customer there!!

Hi All.

I have a 5060 and have not had a problem. Can you advise what the problems are with this Camera.

Thank You all.

See here,

I emailed Olympus who told me this;

Dear Sir/Madam,

Thank you for your email.

The C-5060 has not has any major problems in comparison to any other brands. Unfortunately though, the C-5060 has been discontinued. It may still be available in some stores but has been replaced by the C-7070.

And this;

While some user' groups may have reported problems with the mode dial,
there has never been a systemic failure of this type with the 5060 nor any
recall related to this issue. I personally have used several 5050 and
5060 cameras and never found this to be an issue with either of those
model. We stand by the high quality of our products and should there be
any failure we would rectify the problem. You can rest assured that you
are buying a top quality camera when you buy a C-5060. See the following
