When working with a Sigma lens, how much of a difference does HSM have? For example the Sigma 100-300mm F4.0 EX lens is offered in HSM version for the Nikon D70 and non-HSM for the Minolta 7D. All things being equal, would the Nikon focus faster (or much faster) then the Minolta using this lens?

The HSM is faster regardless of the camera... Some older lens do not have HSM on Nikon bodies for example!

There's no gearing in an HSM mechanism, and why one can overide the AF full-time by just turning the focusing ring on the lens - It's also almost silent in operation because it's driven by ultrasound.

When the drive is in the camera there's almost always some reduction gears involved and never 'really' quiet because of this
