after being bitten by the digital bug
I am missing my old 18mm wide angle lens
for my 35mm SLR.
What are the best affordable (<$800)
options for getting the same wide angle
arrangement in a 5+ MPixel camera?

-a digital SLR with a 12mm aftermarket(cheaper)lens
-a SLR-like digicam with add-on lens convertor.

Any advice on brands and models?\
Thanks much

Check out http://www.raynox.com. They have a fantastic 0.66 wide angle converter with almost no barrel distortion. You can buy it at http://www.bugeyedigital.com or on ebay for under $100. It's a 52mm diameter lens, check which adapter you need for your camera on the Raynox website.

If you can live with more barrel distortion Raynox also makes a .5 converter and a fisheye lens.

Personally I have a Panasonic Lumix FZ20 with the DCR-6600PRO Pro-Wideangle lens and I could not be happier.

The Olympus C-5060 has a 27-110mm lens. With the CLA-7 conversion lens adapter and WCON-07C wide angle conversion lens, it becomes 18.9mm on the wide end. My brother has this setup and is very pleased with it. There is a picture of it on the second page of Steve's review of the C-5060. You should be able to buy it for well under $800.
