Sorry for some reason I can't edit my own post.

The kind of shooting you are interested in sound like good outdoor activities, so if the games are in the daytime you should have lots of light.

They are action sports, which will need faster shutter speeds tofreeze the action.

Sounds like your requirements are a lot like mine were...mega zoom, 4 MP minimum, decent movie mode, short lag times. You are asking for quite a bit for your budget. Keep one thing in mind...you're going to need to spend money on accessories - above and beyond the initial outlay for the camera. You'll need a carry case, additional memory cards, batteries and a charger, and a UV filter.

I really liked the FZ3, which has a 12x zoom, but only 3.2 MP. To get the 4 MP meant moving up to the FZ15, which added about $100. I bought the S5100, which has a 10X zoom, 4 MP, which had all the features I wanted, and it was less expensive than the FZ3. You can pick up the camera now for around $260. It uses xD cards, which are a little pricey, but you can usually get a good deal on ebay. If you plan on using the movie mode...trust me - you will need additional memory cards. You'll also need to buy a couple of sets of NiMh batteries and a good charger. The S5100 gets a lot of use on one set of NiMh batteries, but you'll need another set to use while the first set is recharging.

You might also look at the Minolta DiMage Z2, as it should come in close to within your budget.

Good luck.
