What type of camera equipment do you recommend for the following application. I prefer digital format.

I am looking to take "party pic" style pictures at school dances, and sorority/fraternity evening events (i.e. dimly lit locations). I have seen photographers at these events using cameras with bracketed flashes, and sometimes with external batery packs.

I know enough that I need something with a powerful, external flash placed away from the lens to reduce red eye; and I also know that on-board batteries deplete quickly.

What else do I need to know about this application?

I'd suggest a Fugi S7000, plus an extra optional external flash. I read it takes good group photo's, and captures good low light shots.

If you can afford it (it's not clear what your budget is), a low-end DLSR like the newly announced Canon Digital Rebel/350D is perhaps best. DSLRs are in a different league when it comes to low-light pics but they cost more and are bigger.
