I'm looking for a good, compact digicam and I think that around 5mp would suit me best. Which camera do you think would be best?

I've sort of narrowed it down to these two but if you have any other suggestions that'd be great too!

The Sony P200 also looks good (7mp). I'm swaying toward the Canon though because I've already got a 512MB CF card...

What do you recommend? :?:

I now can't decide between two cameras - the Sony P200 (7mp) and the Canon S500 (IXUS 500) (5mp).

Sony P200
+ Bigger screen
+ Better battery life
+ Fast (low shutter lag)

- Less control over pictures
- Need to buy a memory card
- Loss of detail to reduce noise
- Batteries charged only in camera
- Some blurring problems?

Canon S500
+ Pictures just about as good as the 7mp Sony
+ More options
+ Clearer images
+ Separate battery charger
+ Already got a CF card

- Slow (bad shutter lag)
- Less megapixels (resolution)
- Small screen

After looking on www.imaging-resource.com I can see very little difference between the sample photos from each camera. The file size of the 7mp samples are sometimes less than those of the Canon (too much compression?).

Which one would you recommend? Both are similarly priced.

i would stay away from the p100 because i work at an electronics store and i have seen WAY too many of those come back due to lens and screen problems. hopefully the P200 will be a much better built camera for the price. if you want a better comparison in a canon look at the SD400 ($399 retail 5MP) or SD500 ($499 retail 7MP) they offer a larger screen, smaller body, and a faster startup time than the S-series. personally i have the SD300 ($349 retail 4MP) and i am in love with it. if you want any pictures, lemme know!

Happy hunting

Yeh, the Canon SD400 does look like an option. A lot of people on these forums seem to recommend against the SD range though so I'll wait until I've seen a review of the SD400 on imaging-resource.com or here first.

I've already got 2 128MB SD cards as well so an SD camera would be a good idea tbh.
