I put a Sigma 18-125mm lens on my XT. Seems to take good pictures and is in your price range. It's a good walk around lens.

I'm researching the same purchase, 350XT + 18-125mm lense. Being a rookie about the whole thing I've read many posts here and talked to various local camera sales people.

I understand that the 18-125 was designed for the digital SLRs with a specific CCD/CMOS sensor size. It's equivalant to a 28-200mm 35mm film SLR. The 28-200mm lense on the XT would be equivalant to 45-320mm 35mm film SLR.

My problem is trying to decide between the Canon XT and the Pentax ist DS. There are many lenses to choose from for the Canon. And very few for the Pentax. However the Pentax feels so much better in the hand. The Nikon D70 is too big; however I might need the extra weight to counter ballance a big lense.

You might copy your question to the Canon SLR forum. I think more people would be likely to read it there.

My thoughts:
A DSLR cannot be good with a bad lens.
So lenses are a very big issue.
However, comfort is too.
I think you should try maybe to ask in a store to attach to the XT a battery grip that will give it some more weight and might be a little bit more comrftable
