Hi All,

This is my first post at Steve's Digicams Forum. My name is Anand, and I am from India. You guys seems to know a lot!

I am planning to get a digital camera, hence thought I would get advice from you guys. What I need is a good camera for personal use. Since cameras are much costlier in India tha the US, I need to make sure that I make the correct decision.

Here are the ones that I shortlisted:

1. Canon Powershot A95 - costs around $340 in India - Chinese make.
2. Sony Cybershot DSC-W7 - costs around $400 - Japanese make.
3. Nikon Coolpix 5900 - $330

Fuji is rare to find in India, so I don't think I can add the Fujifilm E550 to the list.

Please help me, and let me know which one is the best choice? Any advice are welcome

Regards,
Anand

If it was me and I was choosing between the three, I would go with the DSC-W7. It's compact with a huge LCD screen. Plus it has 7mp with 32 mb built into it. I have never owned a Sony, so I can't speak for the image quality, but I've heard good things. I do own a Canon A80, which sahres many features with the A95 and I like the camera very much, especially the twist and swivel lcd screen, although small. I have owned a Nikon before and wasn't thrilled with the pictures it took. Hope this little bit of insight helps.

All three of those cameras are very capable - there isn't a "best" choice. If you like to exert manual control over your exposures, then get the A95. Otherwise, just get the cheapest one, and spend some extra money on a larger memory card and spare batteries.

Thanks a lot for your replies! Now I think the battle is between DSC-W7 & Powershot A95 :?

Do I need to take into consideration the fact that A95 is of chinese make?

If the movie mode is important for you, keep in mind that A95 really fails in that aspect. It can take movies only up to 30 seconds.

But the image quality of A95 is better than W7 in my opinion.

The manual mode and sviwel lcd are also big plusses for the A95.

Briefly,it'shard to decide

I wouldn't take that into consideration at all. Canon makes an excellent camera with very good optics.

Phil has a good point though, remember you will have to purchase a larger memory card and a spare set of batteries!

Good luck!
