Im looking for a relatively cheap high-zoom digital camera.
Ive seen the fuji at $199 and the olympus at $149.
The fuji is 4 mp while the olympus has only 3.2 mp and both with 10x zoom
Which one do you think I should buy or is there an alternative for around the same price?

Ive posted this on a different forum but haven't received a reply.

Hi JW: you are choosing between 2 good cameras. I have used and like both, but stuck with the Olympus. Keep in mind that both the C740 and the S5100 are older models, but are still desired and sought after by many people. That tells you that they are good cameras.

Also look at the newer models C750, C765, and C770. You can buy reconditioned and warrantied Olympus cameras direct from Olympus from their EBay auction site.

They usually have C740s andhigher modelsfor great prices. Check it out. Also, Circuit City has both the C765 & C770 for sale on an internet special

Good luck,

jw.,

I usually don't disagree with Steven R, but this time I must. Regarding the statement that both the C740 and S5100 are older models... The S5100 was announced in July 2004 and began shipping in October 2004 - not that long ago. The C-740 was announced in March of 2003 and became available in April of 2003. The C-740 is no longer in the current Olympus lineup, and is therefore discontinued. The S5100 is a current Fuji model.

As a comparison, The C-740 is 3.2 MP, has no AF assist, and has a video resolution of 320 x 240 @ 15 FPS with no sound. The S5100 is 4 MP, has AF assist, and has a video resolution of 640 x 480 @ 30 FPS with sound.

I'm sure the C-740 is a very good camera...I can't say - I've never used one. I own the S5100, and I know it is a very good camera. Assuming the same price and same picture quality, the deciding factor would be features. There isn't too much difference between 3.2 and 4 MP, and the video sound may not mean anything to you. However, I consider the AF assist a very important feature, and I would also prefer to buy a current model camera rather than one which has been discontinued.

Good luck.

As usual, the Hun is right. I tried the S5100 in Dec. 04, and I was thinking it had been out about a year. Must have been thinking of the s5000. I should have looked it up. The C765 & C770 are contemporary with the S5100.

The Fuji is a good camera, and like some Oly models, will be in demand even after newer models come out.

P.S. for the Hun: My local Sam's Club now has 256mb xD cards for only $32. Check yours to see if they have the same price.

Thanks,

Steven R.

Steven R,

Thanks for the kudos, as well as the xD tip. I picked up a couple of 256 MB xD cards on ebay a while back. Wound up being about that much, delivered (think I paid like 22.75 + 9.99 shipping & insurance). You might be able to do a little better now - the prices keep coming down. I've been keeping my eye out for a good price on a 512 MB xD - not that I really need one (the 256 cards work for me), but it would be nice to have one for some extended video clips. [best price I've seen so far is $49.03 delivered] Now that the 1 gig cards are out, the prices on the smaller cards should start to fall.

Thanks for all the advice. I ended up going with the olympus which I liked the feel of and was $50 cheaper. My main concern was image quality and hearing they were about the same, I just went the with olympus. This camera will hopefully be a bridge to a d-slr in the future.
