hi all! i am from the philippines and anovice in digital photography. i am currently searching for a good camera that will fit my budget.

i would really love to have a dslr in the near future but because of taxes and budget constraints i am limited to very few options. see, i would have to pay tax of about 30% if i am to purchase a camera over $500 in the us. if less its tax free and that would mean a lot of savings because high end digital cameras here are very expensive.

and so ihave narrowed my choices down to these cameras:

1. olympus c-8080

2. canon g6

also because of familiarity and support of these products in my country these have been on top of my list for a while now.

hope you could suggest other brands, its capabilities and expandability options.

thank you very much in advance

most likely aside from making this my family camera. i would want to use it for some product/commercial photography, macro and maybe even some interior panoramic shots for virtual tours.

I would think you could pick up the Canon S70 for a few bucks cheaper then the G6, The reviews put it at a G6 in sheeps clothing. I have one and am very happy with it. ROn

Yes I would think the features are more, I was think about the size but I see in your original post that did not matter to you, When I was looking at cameras the size mattered to me, I could not see taking a dslr type camera to all the places I go. The S70 fits nice on my hip with a small case. Goodluck, Ron

Hi tf2985: One of my cameras is an Olympus C8080, and it is a fantastic camera. But I am an experienced photographer, if I had bought it as a novice, I probably would have hated it - it has a such a multitude of menus and settings, etc. The learning curve is challenging. It is a great camera, but may cause frustration for a novice such as yourself.

Since you listed yourself as a novice, and also face steep taxes for higher priced cameras, may I offer a suggestion? The Olympus C5500 is a small, good handling, camera, with both automatic and manual controls.(It is known as the C-55 in Europe and some other countries.) At 5.1MP with 5x zoom, it offers excellent photos, and is a great camera to learn with as you advance from using automatic to manual controls.

You should be able to buy it for about half of what you would pay for a C8080. It would fit easily in your coat or pants pocket. Current owners seem to really like it.

Anyway, good luck in your search. Keep us posted as make your decision.
