I need to buy a camera this week. I love to take scenery pictures to enlarge and paint themlater on so they need to be good quality.I also use it for every day family pictures. Can I get that from a compact digital camera? I have been using an Olympus C5050 that is broken and am looking for something else. I have been debating on a Canon G6 , Pro 1 or Rebel XT, since I already have the CF cards and have used the wide angle. I also have an old Rebel G camera and some lenses and filters. I would just love to avoid carrying all of that equiptment if I can get all of this or most of this out of a smaller lighter camera when I am travelling. Any suggestions?

Was the quality of the C5050 sufficient for your work? If it was adequate, then a compact digital camera should fit your needs.

The pictures were very good. Can you recommend a good compact camera?

I really like the C8080. It has great reviews on both Steve's site and www.dpreview.com. The controls will be very similar to the C5050. BuyDig has the camera for less than $500. Here is a link:

The C8080 has a wider end than the C5050 for landscape pics.

Thanks. The only problem is that it's still a large camera for travelling.

What about a Panasonic FZ5 or Canon S2 SI or some other 10-12x camera? Wouldn't one of these be just as reliable as a wide lens camera for landscapes and such? :-)

The C8080 is smaller than any DSLR you could purchase. Maybe you need to look at some ultra compact models. Click on the best cameras link on the front page of Steve's web site.
