Although I have a Fuji F10, which I love, I am thinking about buying a second camera with a 10-12x zoom lens. Which of these would you recommend for excellent image quality, battery life and compact size? I love the Canon G6 but it is only 4x (but you can always add a telephoto or wide angle lens); the S2 seems to large and bulky, and has a smaller LCD; the Panasonic FZ5 gets high marks all around and is also smaller than the other too. Any advice from the experts and the experienced would be much appreciated. Thanks.

You are referring to the Panasonic FZ5 I presume? Do you own one? Are you happy w/ image quality, size & battery life? The other advantage, of course, is the price - just $375.00 on butterflyphoto.com - an amazing price, don't you think?

Dcresource has reviewed the S2, so you can have a look there. I've also had to decide between the S2 and the FZ5. I've chosen the FZ5, but I have not used it yet due to my temporary financial inabilty to buy the camera.

It's mostly a preference thing.

S2 vs FZ5:
AA batteries vs Li-ion batteries
Tilt-and-swivel LCD vs fixed LCD
LCD gains up in low light vs LCD not gaining up in low light
MF vs no MF
Doesn't come with lens adapter and hood vs coming with lens adapter and hood
Canon lens vs Leica lens

I advise you to read the reviews for yourself at Dcresource (again, that site has reviewed BOTH cameras. Steve is busy with his own review, but I don't know when it'll be available).

I would have to say that, first of all, they are both excellent cameras and both have great reviews. I was comtemplating almost the same thing as you exept i was choosing between the Konica-Minolta Z5, the Panasonic FZ5 and the Cannon S2 IS. I chose the Panasonic over the Cannon mainly because of the price difference (which is 100$ Canadian).

My suggestion would be the same as PvB's, know your stuff and read every review you can find. That makes it an easier choice.

put a lot of thought into that answer didn't you. I chose the FZ5 because IMO it produced less noise, plus it has a very fast focus. Both arefine camera's .

Regarding"the S2 destroys the FZ5." If you would like to offer some substance to your reasoning that would be fine, but your remark really tells me nothing except your personal opinion, with no facts to back it up. :?

The professional reviews for the FZ5 place it on an equal footing with the S2, except for the differences noted by others, including the $100 price difference!

certainly.

S2:

better macro (0cm).
lower minimum ISO (50 vs 80 for the FZ5).
much more powerful video mode.
USB 2.0 support.
heavier by over 100grams (this is a plus for me. better stability, and feels higher quality).
AA batteries.
S2 has manual focusing.
15sec min shutter vs 8sec on the FZ5.
better max shutter (1/3200 vs 1/2000).
S2 has much more powerful continuous drive shooting.
S2 has movable LCD.
