:?

I can get a Fuji Finepix S5100 for about $300, and a Canon S1 IS for $250. The Canon will also use compact flash (which I already have) instead of xD for the Fuji.

I know the Canon S2 IS is better than the S1 IS, but there is a $200 price difference.

The Canon has image stabilization, but the Fuji has reportedly better optics.

Any recommendations?

I looked at both of the models you listed before I bought the S5100. The picture quality seemed a little better in the S5100, and it fit my hand a lot better than the Canon. If you plan on taking low light pictures, the S5100 has AF assist, the Canon doesn't. The IS may help in some situations, but if the camera can't focus, don't expect much in the way of picture quality.

You should be able to do a lot better than $300 for the Fuji...I got mine for $240, and that was a while ago.

Thanks, I did like the feel of the S5100.

Currently the best price I can find for a new S5100 is $300 at Amazon or I can pick up at the local Sam's Club for $311 plus tax. Looking at the online camera merchants, I can only find refurbished models for under $300 with shipping.

Maybe I should just be patient, but it goes against my nature.

Did the $50 rebate end already? Even at $300, the Fuji S5100 is on par with cameras twice the price.

The $50 rebate ended July 2. Butterfly Photo is advertising the camera at $248, but that is after the $50 rebate. When you view the rebate coupon, it clearly says it is valid until 7/2/2005.

I had both digicams at home to compare,

1) the S1 had more noise in pics, & video, in low light (ISO 200 & 400) then the 5100

2) the S1 struggled to focus in low light, or took forever to focus, while the 5100 locked on, and focused fast, with no problem under these same conditions

3) the S1 was sluggish in most operations, compared to the 5100

4) the pics were sharper on the 5100

5) I couldn't tell when the IS was on or off on the S1??? (the Fugi took great shots at long zoom I found, anyway)

6) The S1 is a nice feature rich camera I wanted to like, but these issues were a dealbreaker (then on the 4th day, it completely died??? So, back it went to Dell)

MikDee,

Thanks. This is very useful, I will stay away from the Canon S1. I have talked to others that had very good things to say about the Fuji S5100.

Fuji has apparently extended the $50 mail in rebate on the 5100 until Sept 2, 2005. Look on the Best Buy website and it shows the $50 coupon as valid thru 9-02-05.

Bought my S5100 in late Jan from Butterfly Photo for $267, plus $11.50 shipping. Amazon has it now for $299, and it includes a 128MB xd card. Also, if you sign up for an Amazon Visa card, they automatically give you a $30 discount off your first order. This drops it down to $269, with free shipping. Not bad considering the free 128 card.
