I know the movie mode is better with the S2 IS. The Panasonic is smaller, that's a plus. I've held an S2 IS, it'sok in terms of size. I have not been able to get hold of a Panasonic to compare it.

I see from reading reviews that the Panasonic is a bit faster, has less shutter lag. But given that, would S2 owners characterize their camera's as having a *lot* of shutter lag? Or is it just a case of "fast, but not the fastest"?

I'd like to hear impressions.

I don't know about the Canon, but I'm VERY impressed with FZ5 speed. It has a fast autofocus as well.

The full autofocus lag on the FZ5 is 0.51 at wide and 0.56 at full zoom. It is 0.60 at wide and 0.62 at telephoto on the S2. That doesn't seem like a dramatic difference.

I keep all of my cameras with continuous focus in that mode unless I am concerned with the battery life and don't have a spare with me. That lets you hold a pre-focus until you get the shot you want even if the target moves. And you get almost instant shutter response pre-focused. I think most people learn to pre-focus for most shots. Both of those cameras have continuous focus.

The Panasonic DMC-FZ5 is smaller and lighter than the Sony or the Canon. It's just as fast or faster at focusing and capturing and produces image quality very close to tha Canon and well above the Sony. Look into the high amount of purple fringing found on the Sony by Steve, dpreview.com and other review sites.

I finally was able to look at and hold a Panasonic Z5. It's nice that it's small and all, but it really felt cheap and plasticky to me. I'm gonna go for the S2

Did you get the camera yet? If so, can you let us know how you like it. I'm deciding between the same two cameras.

I haven't gotten it yet. I ordered it, should be here any day. But as I said in an earlier post, I have held them both and like the feel of the Canon way better than the Panasonic.

The *only* advantage the Panasonic might have, as far as I can tell, is askooch faster shutter, but I've read enough posts from people that have Canons to figure that, at least for me, it's a non-issue. i.e., the Canon is fast enough!
