The FZ5 is a better camera IMO. Less CA in the lens and higher resolution. It has less shutter lag and faster cycle times, plus a much better burst mode. It also has a focus assist light. It is on Steve's list of best cameras and "highly recommended" at dpreview.

The S1 was not a highly thought of camera. There were focus problems and the images didn't seem great. It does have a better movie mode if you get a large memory card and the flip-out LCD is nice. The new S2 is an excellent camera, but not in the same price range you are looking for.

While I've got you (so to speak), what do you think of the S2 vs the FZ5? I'm on the fence between those 2 Cameras.

I dont know much about the S1, but I would choose the FZ5. I think the S2's better than the FZ5, but the FZ5 is better than the S1. No contest imo.

But be aware that the FZ5 uses a propriatary battery. Find out how much one costs, because you'll need a spare.Dont know what the other pana's use. Maybe theyre interchangeable. For the S1 you'll need to get a charger and 2 sets of rechargables.

"I sugegst you first do the maths and find out what it will realy cost you. Then go for the FZ5 :-p

Joe: I had to decide between the FZ5 and the S2 and the H1. I chose the S2.

Hi Joe:

I tend to agree with Carrots' assessment.

The FZ5 has a better burst mode. I use that often on my FZ10. But the S2 burst isn't bad. The H1 by comparison has no real burst mode.

I think the lens is a little better on the FZ5. It has lower purple fringing and is just a tad faster at full zoom.

But the S2 has some really good features. The movie mode approaches camcorder quality. The movies are high quality with stereo sound. You can use the optical zoom while recording and the movies are mechanically stabilized. The only downside to the movies is that Canon evidently won't pay the licensing fee for MPEG4, so the movies take a lot of space.

I find a flip out LCD to be handy and I like the control setup better on the S2. If I were getting a super zoom camera today it would probably be a S2.
