I own the *ist DS and don't think that it's that troublesome to carry around. However, if you want a more than decent point and shoot, I think the Olympus C-7070, 8080 or the Canon G-6 would all be quite satisfactory choices. If you want a superzoom that takes good pictures, consider the Panasonic FZ-20. The ultra wide zoom 8 megapixel Olympus 8400 is on special sale at Ritz now for $499.

Your dad will be quite pleased with any of the those cameras, I think.

It was on www.ritzcameras.com.

I don't know about the brick and mortar stores.

Check out Steve's review of this camera. One thing that this camera could do well is take pictures of large family gatherings.

At his age, I would recommend getting a model with built in image stabalization (heck, I'm 50 & I need it)!

Thanks, Sarah,

Your're right. I had a brain malfunction.

Of course, it's the Nikon Coolpix 8400.

70 is nothing for some people and 55 is over the hill for others... You know yor Dad best though, and point & shoot is great for a lot of people... for birds, think about Sony Cybershot DSC-H1 with 12x zoom and image stabilization... on sale at many reputable Internet sites for around $425 US ... (although I bought the olympus E-300 kit with 2 lens.... 53 but not over the hill yet.....)
