I'm in the digital signage business where most of the large format LCD panels we use are 16:9 aspect ratio. I'm looking for a digital camera that shoots in this 16:9 aspect ratio. When images shot with a 4:3 or 3: 2 aspect ration are displayedon a widescreen, they always leave a black band on either side of the image.

Apart from Panasonic's Lumix DMC-LX1 (which is not available yet, as far as I know) does anyone know of any other camera that shoots in 16:9? Does anyone know where I can get the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX1 immediately?

Other way is to just shoot normaly and then crop 16:9, the flat panels generally run 1280/1366x768 or 1024x1024 - hardly 2 Megapixels, so you can get away with alot.

I think the Panasonic FZ30 will also do 16:9.

The panasonic FZ20 has an option to shoot "HDTV" - which I believe is 16:9.

Thanks, curiosity54.

I just ordered the FZ30 from B&H. I wonder why Panasonic is touting the LX1 as the" world's first" 16:9?

SECAUCUS, NJ (July 20, 2005) - Panasonic is introducing another industry first today, the 8.4 megapixel Lumix DMC-LX1, the first digital camera to have a true 16:9 CCD for taking wide aspect pictures. This compact camera also features a 2.5" color LCD, an image stabilized 4x optical zoom, equivalent to 28 to 112mm on a 35mm camera.

The key words are"16:9 CCD" -- this camera is made to take HDTV ratio images whereas the others use a standard size CCD with a 4:3 aspect ratio and then crop a 16:9 image from it.
